On January 24, 2024, the UK National Cyber Security Centre, also known as NCSC, made an announcement regarding its publication of a report on the impact of AI on cyber operations and threats over the next two years. According to the report, AI is expected to significantly increase the frequency and severity of cyber attacks in the near future. The report also highlights the fact that various cyber threat actors, including both state and non-state entities of different skill levels, are already utilizing AI to some extent.

The report also points out that AI enhances capabilities in reconnaissance and social engineering, making these methods more effective and harder to detect. Additionally, AI is said to “lower the barrier” for entry for inexperienced cyber criminals, hackers-for-hire, and hacktivists, thereby contributing to the global threat of ransomware.
