Some coast guard services, particularly in the Aegean Sea, have been accused of engaging in a controversial practice known as ‘drift-back’ to discourage asylum seekers from reaching their intended destination. This practice involves intercepting boats carrying asylum seekers within EU territorial waters and forcibly redirecting them back to the country they departed from. There have been allegations of coast guard personnel physically loading the boats with asylum seekers and towing them back, posing serious ethical and legal concerns.
